Tomorrow is the first day of school, finally!

back to school

So school is back in session starting tomorrow. I can’t say that I’m not glad that school is starting back up because I definitely am. Even though my son starting school also means that I’m starting school, and I’ve got some classes this semester that are harder than previous classes. That’s okay though, I’m looking forward to having my days back. During the summer I took classes full time and between that and the kiddo being out of school I feel like I didn’t get any type of vacation at all. Sure, there were times when he was visiting grandparents and what not but the school work never stopped. I’m not complaining, though. It’s going to be totally worth it in the end.

Anyway, I’ve got all of his school supplies finally. That’s a whole different soap opera I’ll get into at a different time. At least he’s ready to go. I’m so happy that we’ll be getting back into the school routine.

I can’t believe i have a child who is in the 5th grade. I still remember being in the 5th grade. I sometimes still feel like that lost, confused little kid. It’s weird that I can remember that feeling so clearly and remember my teachers, the work we did, riding my bike to school and all that stuff and here I am with a son that’s just about to be going through the same things I went through. Some day I feel so old, but some days I still feel like a kid.

My Kiddo Is In The Choir

The 2nd to last week of school, my son and his choir class had a little musical thingy. It was about Aesop’s fables and how the moral of the fables still pertain to everyday life today because they are about human nature. Anyway, it was a pretty good event. I enjoyed myself.

(He can’t really be seen in this picture, but he’s there.)

My kiddo was part of the choir, they sang the chorus. There were a bunch of kids there, and after the event the school had a family fun night. We got to walk around to each of the classrooms and play games and what not. It was pretty fun.

That’s just another reason why I really like his school. They do a lot of fun things for the kids. They attempt to make learning fun and reward the kids for their hard work. I really like that. It makes him want to do well and it also makes him want to learn. He doesn’t like to miss school, that’s a good thing.

It’s Almost Over

Today I went to an awards program at my son’s school. All of the fourth graders were there and the students were given awards based on various things like grades, attendance, accelerated reading and stuff like that. My kiddo got an award for getting a perfect score on the Reading TAKS test and he got an award for getting a perfect score on the Math TAKS test. He also got an award for getting over 100 AR points. I’m so proud of him.

You know when your child gets awarded for things like that at school, it’s a reflection on your parenting. I am proud of myself for knowing that I play a big role in my son’s education. I encourage him and help him as much as I can. I know that ultimately, though, he is the one doing the work and he is the one succeeded. He’s an amazing kid.

After the awards program we were told if we wanted to sign our child out for the rest of the day or for just lunch that we could do so. I asked him if he wanted to go but he didn’t because today was also the auction in his homeroom. He’d been telling me about this all year, and he’s been waiting for it. His homeroom teacher set up a system to promote good behavior and also responsibility. The kids were given “dollars” (not really dollars, of course) for exhibiting good behavior, respect for others and for bringing signed report cards, permission slips and stuff like that back in a timely manner.

My kiddo had 360 of these “dollars” so on this day the teacher held an auction. Apparently he’d been buying toys and what not from Toys R Us throughout the year and the kids got to “bid” on them today. So he wanted this electronic keyboard, and he told me he was watching to see how much the kids were willing to bid on other things so he knew what he needed to bid in order to get the keyboard. He bid 300, and won. He used the remainder of his dollars to bid on a harmonica. So he came home with a brand new electronic keyboard and a harmonica. It’s a decent little keyboard.

That’s something that I really like about his school. They offer many incentives to the children to increase their desire to read more, excel in their studies and exhibit good behavior. We didn’t have anything of the sort when I was in school.

In just a few days, he’s going to be finished with fourth grade. Ah.. next year he’ll be a 5th grader.
