Since my son is enrolled in the Gifted & Talented program at his school, he brings home much harder homework than the students in his class that aren’t in GT. Today he brought home some pyramid math thing where he had to come up with the missing numbers in the pyramid. It was actually way harder than it sounds, but he got it done. I think I mentioned before that he’s also doing algebra in his GT class. I think that’s pretty cool, but kind of weird. Mainly because I didn’t start learning algebra until the 9th grade and he’s just started the 3rd grade.
Anyway, as I mentioned in a recent post, my kiddo’s birthday is coming up. He doesn’t read this blog, I don’t think, but just to be on the safe side I am not going to mention what I’m getting him. I want it to be a surprise. I mean, I’m not even sure he knows about this blog, but he’s a pretty perceptive kid and he reads my other blog sometimes, so I’m thinking it’s a possibility that he reads it. Who knows.

I got Eric’s first third grade report card today. I can honestly say I’m very pleased. He’s such smart guy. I’m so proud of him.
His grades for the first 9 weeks are as follows:
English & Language Arts - 97
Social Studies - 93
Math - 100
Science - 100
In music and physical education he gets letter grades like “S” and “E”. He got an S for music and an E for P.E. He brought up his Social Studies grade tremendously. He wasn’t doing too well in that class at first. I think maybe he just had to get used to switching classes and what not. Because this is the first year where the students go to a different teacher for different subjects. You can obviously see what his favorite subjects are in school. He’s loved math and science since before he even started school. Yay for my Mr Smartypants.

Monday Eric brought home his first progress report for 3rd grade. I must admit when I saw it, I was completely shocked. He has a 98 in Reading, 100 in math, 100 in science, and a 71 in Social Studies!! Seventy One! Next to his grade was handwritten “missing work”, and when I asked him about the horribly low grade he said it’s because he forgot to turn in his work and left it in his “work in progress” folder. He said he turned it in that day, but that the teacher already had made out the progress reports. I explained to him that a 71 is simply unacceptable because I know he can do better, and that if he brings home a grade like that again he’s definitely going to be punished. I didn’t punish him this time, though. I wrote his teacher a note and asked about the grade, but have yet to receive a response.
For some children, a 71 might be considered “okay” or even “good”. My uncle used to have problems in school so when he brought home anything above failing, he was doing good. My son, however, has n ever brought home anything below a 95, so this is definitely upsetting to me. It makes me wonder if he’s just becoming really lazy or what. I simply don’t know. Anyway, I know that it better not be happening again. >;[
