A 5th Grader Jacked My Child’s Cell Phone

Yesterday morning I’m sitting in my car and my cell phone rings. The display is lit up with “Eric”, and I’m wondering why in the world my son is calling me from school. But when I answer, I find that it’s my son’s elementary school principal asking if I am the mother of the person who owns the cell phone and what school does he go to. This has me a little concerned. He explains that the phone was confiscated from a 5th grade girl who was caught playing with it in the bathroom. She was standing in front of the mirror taking pictures of herself! She said some boy on her bus gave her the phone. The principal called Eric into his office to find out what was going on, and Eric had no idea that his phone was even missing from his backpack. Apparently the girl just jacked it on the bus when he wasn’t looking. Thank goodness the little thief was caught playing with it, or we may have never gotten it back. I had to go pick it up from the school, though.. some weird rule they have.

Anyway, the whole situation disturbs me on many levels. Namely, this little girl’s parents are raising a kleptomaniac, apparently. Another thing is, is my child just that oblivious to what’s going on around him that he doesn’t notice some kid taking the cell phone out of it’s little holster that is connected to his backpack? I guess though, if you are on a bus with a bunch of rowdy kids and some sneaky little klepto is slyly trying to jack you, you might not notice. >;[

Homework

When I was in elementary school, and 3rd grade especially, we did not get much homework. My son, however, gets homework daily. Every single day he has to spend about an hour on spelling words and math facts. I know it’s good for him, but I kind of feel sorry for kids nowadays. I remember once my aunt saying she couldn’t believe how much homework my cousin was getting in 4th grade and now I see what she means.

I used to let him go outside and play with his friends for a few hours before making him sit down and do his homework, but now that he has so much of it to do I just can’t let him do that. Now he has to do his homework first, and sometimes it takes him awhile to do it. I’m afraid if he goes out and gets himself worn out then he will be too tired to concentrate on getting his homework done.

Anyway, if you’ve got school aged children.. do you think they get too much homework?

Woman Breastfeeding Her 7 Year Old

Ok, I breastfed my son for the first 3-4 months of his life. I totally support breast feeding your baby, however this youtube video that I saw is utterly repulsive, in my opinion. This woman breastfed her oldest daughter until she was 5 years old. This same woman is currently still breastfeeding her 7 year old daughter. In the video, you can hear the eldest daughter saying breast milk is “better than mango”. I dunno, this is all too weird for me. Like I said, I totally support breast feeding 100%, but come on. I believe after about a year, it just gets a little odd, and at the age of 5 or 7 it’s just plain sick.
