FEMA And Hurricane Ike

Well, anyone who reads my blog regularly knows that my family and I had to evacuate our homes last month because of stupid Ike. We were told that FEMA would reimburse for the cost of hotels to those individuals that were in evacuation areas. That would be us. However, my mother received a letter yesterday stating she was not eligible for FEMA assistance. When she called, and it’s a miracle she even got through because their phones are always so busy, the lady told her that she had never heard of any such of a program like that and FEMA does not reimburse for hotel stays. They better, because I’m out roughly $700 for hotel accommodations, and I don’t think I’ll get it all back because one of the hotels I stayed at was not in FEMA’s hotel list, but the other was. So by my calculations they owe me roughly $540. My parents didn’t spend as much because I ended up paying for part of their hotel stay. I fully expect to get this money back.

Now I’m worried though, because if they got rejected then I probably will also and I need the money back. I do realize that a lot of other people have it way worse than I do. I had a home to come back to, but I’m not rich either. I have a kid to feed and take care of, and I simply don’t have extra money to be throwing around due to a natural disaster. That’s what FEMA is there for anyway, right? :(

That’s not right at all for the lady to be denying this program’s existence. If she works there she needs to know all their programs, but this is FEMA, so they don’t. They are denying us too because we have homeowner’s insurance, but they’re not going to pay for everything. For example, they’re not going to cover the generator we bought at all, so that’s money we’re out. Sure we’re glad we have it, but still. I suppose that’s why we all have to save for a “rainy day” because we can’t rely on anyone else’s help.

Ah, good old FEMA. I’m beginning to think those people are as useless and incompetent as the IRS, and that’s saying a lot. Hehe. I can’t imagine FEMA not reimbursing your housing expenses. If I were you, I would call and ask to speak to someone in management to find out what’s going on. This is too much money for you just to let it go, ya know?

I wish you luck, sweetie!
