Since reading and blogging about the child who was suspended from school because of his anti-Obama t-shirt, I’ve been thinking about about what we as parents are teaching our children, and what they are actually picking up from us that we may not even realize we are teaching them. As parents, it is our responsibility to teach our kids the various basics of life, and also to be moral, responsible, upstanding citizens. But we are only human, we make mistakes, we sometimes thrust our opinions and judgments onto our children unconsciously. Some people may purposefully try to raise little clones of themselves, who knows. The bottom line is, that we should be more careful. Our babies learn by example more than anything. What we say shouldn’t vary from what we do, because it’s what we do that is guiding our young people’s minds. I, myself am guilty of sometimes not leading my child in the right direction by example. I’m sure he sometimes gets confused. I tell him not to do something, that it is wrong, and then I turn around and do or say the very thing that I told him not to do. What am I teaching him? That my word is meaningless? I want my child to trust my word, and believe in me as a person and as a parent. Don’t you?

That certainly is a tough one. Too, the adult world has a lot of gray areas and exceptions that kids won’t understand, so even the best of parents end up contradicting themselves.
