As I may have mentioned before, my parents have a friend who lives in my apartments. I asked them to call her and find out exactly what the situation is because I’m so anxious to be able to get back home. She said that there is still no power, but the water is okay. She also said there is absolutely no food anywhere. The grocery stores are running on generators, but there is no food on the shelves, especially non perishable foods. She and her family had to get food from a U.S Army truck that was handing out non perishable items and ready to eat meals earlier today.
What this tells me is that it’s not time to go home yet. I mean it gets too hot for one, to live without electricity, but no food? It’s already going to be bad enough because all the stuff in my fridge and freezer are ruined. I’m not complaining though, I know that I’m one of the lucky ones. My home is still in one piece and we are safe and have a place to sleep and a roof over our heads right now when so many other people don’t. But I’m not going back when the living conditions are still pretty bad.
Thankfully Eric’s school is still closed through the rest of the week so he won’t be counted as absent. They had originally called everyone with a recording saying schools would be closed until today, Tuesday, but I hadn’t heard anything else. I was kind of worried, but I’m not driving back and living with no food or electricity just to keep my son from being absent from school.

We are currently staying in a little city right outside of Dallas called Grand Prairie. We rented an apartment for the week, because we have not been given official word that we can return home just yet. Well, yesterday someone placed a little flier on all the doors of this apartment complex for a place called Sunset Steaks and More. They offer free delivery and their steaks looked and sounded really appealing. Tonight Chris decided that he’d buy us dinner from this place, which was pretty nice of him. So we called the number on the flier. It went to some strange voicemail. I guess that was our first clue, right? We called back.. again a voicemail. After several attempts someone with limited knowledge of the English language answered and after asking how long the delivery time would be and getting the response of “an hour and a half”, Chris said that was a little long. Instead of replying, the guy said “K, Bye.” and hung right up. I called back and before I could even get out the rest of what I was saying, he hung straight up. Apparently, they can’t handle their business. Chris called back and the guy explained he was the only one there. (How do they expect to deliver when there is only one person working?) Also, how can only one person handle an entire restaurant on their own? Either way he claimed he didn’t want to deliver To Chris. His exact words were “I do not want to deliver to you.” Excuse me? How rude. I have half a mind to prank call him all night and make his night even worse than he acts like it already is. Lucky for him I’m too mature for that, but I guess I’m childish enough that the thought is still in my head. What horrible business practices. This place not only doesn’t care about their customers, or their service and reputation, but they do not deserve my business or anyone else’s for that matter. If you live in the Arlington/Grand Prairie area, Do Not Eat At Sunset Steaks and More!

Not only was Bolivar totally obliterated, but Galveston itself was torn up pretty bad. I’m still confused as to why people didn’t get out. Alot of them are now stuck there, and on the news I heard that they are now considering it a “new disaster” because of the health conditions, lack of food, water, and shelter on the island. I live 45 miles inland and I evacuated, so it just bewilders me. Especially those with children, what were they thinking?

I used to live right by the cemetery. It’s pretty scary looking to me now. I can’t imagine how the loved ones of those buried there must feel right now. I can’t imagine how anyone who lived on Galveston Island feels right now. I just hope they are all safe and healthy.
The death toll as of right now in Texas from Hurricane Ike is 30.
