A member of China’s Politburo decided that the 7 year old girl who sang “Ode to the Motherland” for the Olympics opening ceremonies was not good looking enough for the Olympics and requested for a better looking girl to lip-sync the song. He said he wanted the voice and the face to “match”. Now, I understand them wanting everything to be perfect and all, but what kind of message is that sending to people, especially the children? Can you imagine how that little girl felt when they said “Hey, sorry but you’re too ugly for the Olympics opening ceremonies, we are replacing you with a pretty girl. But you still have to sing.” I’m disgusted with China at this moment. The sad thing is, the girl who lip-synced is getting all this fame and making headlines when she didn’t even really do anything but stand there moving her mouth. The little girl who did the actual singing was said to have the “most beautiful voice.”
Is China Really That Superficial???

LOL@China being caught red handed.
I know, can you believe that crap???
Do you seriously believe that the demonisation of China by the Western media means that this kind of thing doesn’t happen in any other country?
Isn’t America the land of the “Little Miss XYZ” beauty pageant? Isn’t beauty, grace and poise the hallmark of the American public presence? When was the last time you saw anyone who was less than physically attractive on American television?
Hi Amanda, thanks for your comment.
You seem a little offended, and I did not mean to offend. To answer your question…
Rosanne Barr.
I could name a ton of others, lol.. but I know that’s not the point you were trying to make. My problem with the whole thing is the simple fact that they basically told a 7 year old girl “sorry, you aren’t pretty enough.” That’s what I have the problem with.
Well yes, I am offended that you’ve specifically picked out China as the only country where this could ever take place. You are aware of course, that your own country is particularly guilty of prizing beauty and attractiveness over actual talent? The number of attractive people in the public eye is disproportionately higher than those who aren’t (for every one unattractive person you can name, I can name fifty attractive people).
If your only objection is the fact that it is a seven-year-old girl who was passed over, need I again mention the fact that on any particular day, there’s a beauty pageant happening somewhere in America aimed at girls younger than ten years old? A beauty pageant by definition, is the selection of the prettiest girl out of a lineup - yet do you protest against all those other little girls being rejected as ‘not pretty enough’? If you do truly object to such treatment of young girls, it may be more effective to start action against your own native institutions of beauty pageants, makeup industries, entertainment industries, and in fact, anything that supports people making themselves more attractive for gain. It would certainly be a lot more effective than a diatribe against a foreign country that doesn’t take into account the failings of your own country.
With your own country’s faults in mind, why then do you insist on treating China as a special case, as though it is the only country to prize physical attractiveness? Surely you’re intelligent enough to recognise that this demonisation of the country by Western media outlets is engendered via a fear of the unknown, rather than any tangible evidence that couldn’t also be applied to their own countries?
Hey thanks for the novel but uh.. it’s not that big of a deal. You can defend it all you like, the fact is what it is. Again, sorry if I offended you. But you might wanna chill out.
Things like this is why I lost my faith in humanity at age 10.
No doubt.
That’s just sick, really. Poor child. No, that’s not going to affect the rest of her life at all! GAH.
Exactly.
The first thing that came to my mind upon reading that news on Yahoo was my country’s former First Lady who only wanted “the true, the good and the beautiful”, i.e., image-building. What happened in China is so reminiscent about my country during the Martial Law regime.
I know!! I read about this the other day and could not believe it!!
Oh, and I would ignore those “offended” ones, unfortunately they are comparing apples to oranges. You didn’t say anything to offend anyone.
