A few weeks ago I told you all about how my son had a Math and Science night at his school and how he got to make ice cream in one of the classrooms. I also promised I’d share the “recipe”, so here it is. Keep in mind this is just a kid’s project and I wouldn’t really recommend using this recipe to make ice cream in a larger quantity than 1/4 cup.
Materials you will need for each child:
One teaspoon of sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 drops vanilla extract
Measuring cups and spoons
1 locking sandwich bag
1 locking quart size bag
2 cups of ice
1/4 cup of rock salt
1 paper towel
1 plastic spoon to eat ice cream
Instructions:
Put the sugar, milk and vanilla into a Ziploc sandwich bag seal the bag and shake gently to mix the ingredients. Put the bag into another quart sized Ziploc bag. Put ice and rock salt inside the quart sized Ziploc bag (NOT inside the sandwich bag). Wrap a paper towel around the outside of the large Ziploc bag to protect hands from the cold. Knead bag until mixture freezes. Eat and Enjoy!
Things to discuss with your child:
1. What makes a frozen object, like ice cream, melt in your mouth?
2. What makes the ice cream in this recipe turn into a solid.
3. Compare how the liquid recipe and frozen cream are the same and different.
If you’ve got any fun/simple recipes like this that you think my kiddo would enjoy trying out, email me and let me know. If we use your recipe I’ll blog about what we did and how it turned out and give you full credit. Thanks. ![]()

That sounds really neat. Ice cream can really make learning fun for just about any child.
